Update 29 July '21 - Summer weekend minor injuries service for Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe’s Tyrell Hospital is offering a weekend minor injuries unit until the end of the summer.

Patients can either book in through the NHS111 service or attend without an appointment between 10am - 6pm on Saturday and Sundays until the end of August 2021.

The service will be provided by a paramedic and technician They can treat:

  • sprains

  • burns

  • bites

  • wound infections

  • other minor injuries

People with injuries requiring an x-ray or stitches in the area should attend an emergency department.

In the event of a patient presenting with an acute emergency they can provide stabilising treatment whilst awaiting a 999 response.

Healthcare services are also being supplemented by a paramedic and first responder service, supporting existing RNLI lifeguards at popular local beaches in North Devon.  These are provided by the company Role1 and will not impact on South Western Ambulance service.

GP and Clinical Director of North Devon Coastal Primary Care Network Dr Glen Allaway said: " Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and NHS Devon CCG have been working together to ensure there is a local minor injury service in Ilfracombe for locals and holidaymakers this summer. The changes should provide much needed additional resources."

Chair of the League of Friends at Tyrell Hospital, Terry Elliot, said: 'Please support our local health services and use the most appropriate service for your medical needs.  If you have a minor injury please visit the Tyrrell Hospital at weekends between 10am and 6pm to be seen and help relieve the pressure on the Emergency Department at North Devon District Hospital.'

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust temporarily closed Ilfracombe and Bideford Minor Injury Units at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Staff were redeployed to the Emergency Department (ED) at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH), where extra staffing is needed to provide a COVID-safe service.

An increased level of staffing is still required to support  ED and maintain the ongoing health, safety and wellbeing of patients where the number of  patients attending are higher than in MIUs.

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust has been working closely with the Integrated Care System for Devon to recruit new staff and to find alternative interim ways of providing local healthcare services this summer and for the longer term.
