Thinking of having a baby?
This leaflet offers advice if you are planning to become pregnant, or have just become pregnant. The aim is to reduce the risk of harm to the baby, and to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications. There is a summary checklist at the end of the leaflet.
To reduce the risk of harm to your unborn baby it’s a great idea to plan ahead a little. Try & get yourself into some regular exercise & a healthy diet. It’s really important to stop smoking to keep your baby as healthy as possible. Don’t drink too much alcohol either! Taking regular Folic Acid for the 3 months before you get pregnant & for the 3 months after this is recommended. Finally, it's also recommended that you take a supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D during pregnancy and while you're breastfeeding.
As you hold your new baby in your arms, it may be impossible to imagine that you will ever have the energy to go through it all again. But sooner or later, you may decide that you want another child.
